Vivencias en Quemchi

Hey one and all!

He estado trabajando una semana con Yaqu Pacha Chile en Quemchi (Chiloé) y me gustaría contaros cómo fue la experiencia.

I’ve been working with Yaqu Pacha Chile in Quemchi (Chiloé) for a week and I would like to tell you about my experience.

En primer lugar contaros que el grupo de trabajo que tienen es muy potente. Todos y todas las componentes saben muy bien cómo hacer las cosas, qué hacer en todo momento y cómo resolver los problemas. Todo el mundo tiene años de experiencia ya en el campo de estudio y saben cómo ayudarte si tienes cualquier problema.

First of all, I would like to say that the team I worked with was very skilled. All of them know how to do things correctly, what to do in every moment and know how to solve problems. Everyone has a lot of experience with field work and know how to help you solve problems.

Centrándome más en las salidas diarias que hacíamos con el Zodiac (bote), me sorprendió el funcionamiento arriba del mismo. Cada uno de los componentes tiene su función y sabe qué hacer en el momento de tomar las muestras. Además, y lo más importante, es que todos y todas, a lo largo de los transectos que hacíamos cerca de la costa, estábamos pendientes para ver cualquier cosa. Nuestro objetivo principal eran los delfines chilenos pero si veíamos otros mamíferos marinos (como lobos) o algunas especies de aves, teníamos que avisar a los componentes del equipo para anotarlo. Una de las especies de aves más frecuentes que vimos cerca a la costa fueron los ¡Quetrus no voladores!

Focussing on the regular trips with the zodiac (small boat), I was surprised by how smoothly everything worked. Every team member has a role to fulfill and knows what samples to take and how. One of the most important things is that everybody kept a careful lookout during the nearshore transects. Our main objective was to see Chilean dolphins but if we spotted other marine mammals (like sea lions) or some bird species, we had to alert the others to note down the observation. The most commonly seen bird species very close to shore were flightless steamer ducks (quetrus)!

Mi primer día de navegación con Yaqu Pacha fue un éxito. ¡Conseguimos ver 6 delfines chilenos! A pesar de saber lo difícil que podía ser estudiarlos, nunca me imaginé que pudiera costar tanto. Estamos tratando de un delfín que vive casi pegado a la costa, muy pequeño y que, dependiendo de la luz, el viento y las olas puede ser difícil verlo. Lo que nos interesa en especial son las aletas dorsales con el fin de poder foto-identificar a los individuos y generar así, una base de datos. Una vez en el bote, cuando alguien ve a los delfines, es todo súper emocionante. La gente mirando por todos lados, esperando ver soplos, aletas dorales, dorsos, lo que sea. Todo eso con el fin de poder seguir al grupo de delfines y poder asegurar capturar sus aletas dorsales con la cámara para ver si tienen algunas marcas. Tras hacer ya la toma de fotos, después procedíamos a hacer la toma de muestras en la zona donde los vimos para saber las condiciones a las cuales se movían (como la profundidad o temperatura del agua y la distancia a la costa).

My first day on the water with the YaquPacha Chile team was a great success. We saw 6 Chilean dolphins! Despite having read how hard it is to observe this species, I would have never imagined that it is that difficult. We are talking about a small dolphin that seems to hug the shoreline, and that can be incredibly hard to spot if there are any waves or the light is bad. Our main interest is in the dolphins’ dorsal fins as marks on the fins can be used to identify individuals and create a database of individual sightings. When in the zodiac and someone spots a dolphin, it gets very exciting. Everyone is looking around eagerly, to spot a little puff (blow), a dorsal fin, or a dark back at the surface. The aim is to follow the dolphin group and take pictures of the dorsal fins at an angle perpendicular to the camera so that potential marks can later be seen in the photographs. After taking photos we return to the place where the dolphins were first seen and take measurements to characterise the dolphins’ habitat (such as water depth and temperature or distance to shore).

Una vez terminada la salida y lavar todo el material, al volver a la cabaña, ingresamos todos los datos tomados y hacíamos la elección de las mejores fotos para compararlas con la base de datos de photo-identificación. Ya, a modo informal, hablábamos de cómo había ido el día, qué teníamos que mejorar, que estuvo bien.

After the survey and after having cleaned all the field gear we downloaded the data and selected the best photos to be matched to those already in the photo-identification database. We also talked about the day, how things went, what went well and what could be improved.

El segundo día no tuvimos tanta suerte, el motor del bote nos falló y tuvimos que anular la salida. Viendo el pronóstico para el cuarto día, vimos que la previsión era la mejor posible, así que el tercer día fuimos a Castro a reparar el coche y a recoger otro motor que llegaba de Puerto Montt. Aquel día, a pesar de no navegar, fue un día muy agradable porque pudimos pasear un poco por las calles de Castro, y conocer el mercado de mariscos, la feria y la plaza. A modo resumen, salimos de ahí con el coche arreglado y sin motor porque el camión de la encomienda falló en el camino y se atrasó.

The second day we didn’t have that much luck. The boat’s outboard engine developed problems and we had to cancel the outing. The weather forecast was much better for the fourth day so we decided to get the replacement engine sent from Puerto Montt and get the pickup truck fixed in Castro the next day so that we could be on the water again to make use of the good weather... Despite not getting out onto the water, it was a great day. We had time to do a bit of sightseeing in Castro, and to visit the local fish,shellfish and vegetable markets, the handicraft fair (selling hand-made woollen and wooden goods) and the lively town square (lots of stalls and tourists). We left Castro with the pickup truck repaired but without the replacement boat engine because the cargo lorry had broken down en route and was delayed by a day.

Al siguiente día, con el nuevo motor ya (llegando desde el servicio técnico!), intentamos navegar de nuevo y a la primera de cambio, nos volvió a fallar. Gracias a la ayuda de unos salmoneros (gracias Don Hector y Don Mauricio!), finalmente, pudimos navegar por la tarde. Aquella tarde fue un éxito grandísimo porque conseguimos ver un grupo de 10 delfines chilenos (con dos neonatos y una cria), 6 delfines australes y hacer todo el recorrido que teníamos planeado hacer.

The next (fourth) day, with the new outboard engine (fresh from the mechanic!), we took to the water again but this engine soon developed problems. Thanks to the help of some friendly salmon farm workers (Thank You Don Hector & Don Mauricio!) we finally got going in the afternoon. It turned into the most successful day because we managed to find a group of 10 Chilean dolphins (with 2 newborns and one calf), plus 6 Peale’s dolphins, and we completed the entire planned survey route.

La mañana siguiente todo el mundo se levantó súper contento y con muchas ganas de trabajar por la recompensa del día anterior. El problema fue que por la mañana el tiempo no nos fue favorable para salir a navegar y por la tarde no tuvimos tanta suerte como el día anterior. El motor que nos habían arreglado los salmoneros volvió a fallar.

The next morning (fifth day) everybody woke up very happy and with a lot of motivation thanks to the excellent day before. Unfortunately this time the weather was not favourable until the afternoon. When we tried to get out again for a short peek into the neighbouring bay the engine developed problems again.

Ya en mi último día sólo nos dedicamos a recoger todo el material y prepararlo todo para que el equipo pudiera seguir trabajando en Calbuco.

On my last day we took the boat out of the water and prepared everything for the team to move to a new field site near Calbuco (and get the engine fixed again in Puerto Montt with a different mechanic).

Personalmente tengo que decir que, a pesar de la cantidad de problemas que tuvimos con todo tipo de motores, la experiencia la repetiría mil y una veces. La pasión por los mamíferos marinos, y en especial por el delfín chileno, fue mayor día tras día.

Personally I think that despite the fact we had a lot of technical problems with all kinds of engines, I would repeat this experience thousands of times. My passion for marine mammals and, especially for the Chilean dolphin, has increased day after day.

A pesar de la felicidad que te genera ver delfines chilenos en vivo es máxima, nada se puede comparar con la que recibes por parte de todos y cada uno del equipo. La simpatía, el buen ambiente y la buena relación que hay entre todos y todas es increíble y, a eso, estoy inmensamente agradecido de la suerte que he tenido. Sin ese equipo, esa aventura no hubiera sido posible.

In spite of the maximum happiness that Chilean dolphins generate when you see them alive, I cannot compare this with the joy I received from the group. The sympathy, the fun atmosphere and the good relations with everybody was incredible, and for that reason I’m absolutely pleased for the lucky I had. Without this team, this adventure could not have been possible.
