ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: Linking educational institutions, such as schools, universities and NGOs.
Durante cada temporada de trabajos de campo, Yaqu Pacha Chile realiza talleres de educación ambiental en escuelas urbanas y rurales de la isla de Chiloé. Por primera vez después de 14 años, la ONG presentó un proyecto educativo al colegio Manantial situado en la capital de Chile.
During each fieldwork season, “Yaqu Pacha Chile” develops environmental education workshops in urban and rural schools on Chiloe Island. For the first time, after 14 years, the NGO presented an educational project to the Manantial School, located in Santiago, Chile.
Este proyecto educativo está compuesto por un equipo multidisciplinario integrado por la ONG Yaqu Pacha Chile, estudiantes y docentes de la carrera de Psicología de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado, y el apoyo de la dirección, inspección y profesores del colegio Manantial que en conjunto permitieron desarrollar una instancia de conversación, discusión y evaluación en torno al cuidado y conservación de la biodiversidad marina de Chile para alumnos de Sétimo y Octavo año básico (niños entre 12 y 14 años).
This educational project was conducted by a multidisciplinary team including the NGO Yaqu Pacha Chile, the professors and students of Psychology from Alberto Hurtado University, students from 7th and 8th grade (children between 12 and 14 years old), and the support of the directives, inspectors and teachers of the Manantial School. Together they discussed and evaluated the conservation and care of native species such as the Chilean dolphin (Cephalorhynchus eutropia).
Estudiantes de la carrera de Psicología de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado a través de su curso de “Investigación Cuantitativa II” serán los responsables de analizar y evaluar la actitud que presentan los niños frente al medio ambiente, además de una evaluación de satisfacción del taller. Para ello se realizaron dos evaluaciones, una diagnóstica al inicio del taller el día lunes 21 de Septiembre y una al finalizar las actividades el día viernes 24 de Septiembre.
Students from the psychology program of Alberto Hurtado University on the course “Quantitative Research II” were responsible for analysing and evaluating the attitude of the children towards the environment in addition to a satisfaction evaluation of the workshop. For this purpose, two evaluations were undertaken: a diagnostic evaluation at the beginning and one at the end of the workshop. The workshop consisted of 5 consecutive days, starting on Monday September 21st and finishing on Friday September 24th.
El programa / The program
Partiendo el día lunes, se comenzó la evaluación diagnóstica, y luego una presentación de la ONG Yaqu Pacha Chile y del Proyecto de Pequeños Cetáceos de la isla de Chiloé a los alumnos y profesores a través de una charla y recursos audiovisuales.
On the Monday we started with the diagnostic evaluation followed by the presentation of the NGO Yaqu Pacha Chile and the project “Small Cetaceans of Chiloe Island”, by means of a class and a video presentation.
Durante el segundo día nuestro Médico Veterinario y director de investigación Cayetano Espinosa, expuso el primer tema del taller La Conservación Marina abarcando con grán interés de los alumnos conceptos como las especies paraguas y las áreas marinas costeras protegidas.
During the second day, our veterinarian and research director Cayetano Espinosa presented the first topic which corresponded to “Marine Conservation”. This was a great success and incorporated concepts such as “Umbrella Species” and “Protected Areas”.
El tercer día se desarrolló el tema La Biodiversidad Marina, haciendo énfasis en las especies de mamíferos marinos como los pequeños cetáceos que habitan el sur de Chile, y tratando los conceptos de endemismo, especies nativas y relaciones entre organismos, expuesto por la Bióloga Marina Marjorie Fuentes.
On the third day, “Marine Biodiversity” was the topic presented with emphasis on marine mammals. It included the concepts of “Endemism”, “Relationships between organisms” and “Native Species” and was presented by Marjorie Fuentes.
Durante el cuarto día, la estudiante de Biología Marina y voluntaria de Yaqu Pacha Chile, Nicole Zúñiga presentó el tema Contaminación Marina, destacando la problemática de los microplásticos en playas y océanos, las corrientes e islas de basura y el concepto de las 3R (Reducir, Reutilizar y Reciclar).
During the fourth day, our volunteer and marine biology student Miss Nicole Zúñiga presented the topic of “Marine Pollution” highlighting the problem of “micro plastics in beaches and ocean”, “currents and islands of rubbish” and the concept of “the 3 R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle)”.
Finalizando el quinto día, los estudiantes de Psicología de la Universidad Alberto Hurtado realizaron la evaluación final a más de 40 niños. También, solicitamos que los niños pudieran evaluar nuestro taller de educación ambiental calificando las charlas proporcionadas y preguntando si les gustaría continuar con un taller a largo plazo. Además, se realizaó una encuesta para saber cuales son los temas que para los niños son más importantes, resultando una alta votación para especies en peligro de extinción.
Finally, on the 5th day, the students of psychology from Alberto Hurtado University performed a final evaluation on over 40 children. Additionally, we asked the children to evaluate our environmental education workshop giving grades to each presentation and to say whether they would like to continue with the workshop in the long term, for which we got satisfactory results. In order to improve our workshops, we asked the children which topics they would like us to develop in the future and the most voted topic was “endangered species”.
